Zylstra Wins Oswald in Playoff

(October 24, 2011) - Bill Zylstra, who divides his time between Ocala in the winter and Michigan in the summer, captured the Doug Oswald Seniors Tournament Sunday after a one-hole playoff with Walter Himelsbaugh, the first-round leader. Zylstra, a contender in almost every important event in Marion County for a decade or more, posted rounds of 71-71-142 over the par-72 Ocala Golf Club course, while Himelsbaugh shot 70-72.
Jeff Morley and Berger Warner deadlocked for third, both shooting two rounds of even par. Warner's finish was notable because he said before Sunday's round he felt he couldn't win because he's been playing poorly.
Aside from Zylstra's two rounds of 71, and Himelsbaugh's 70, there was only one other under par round posted in the two days, a Sunday 70 by Doug Snoap (75-70-145), who finished fifth. Before the Ocala Golf Club's recent renovation - changing holes, moving tees and repairing greens - there were generally a slew of scores in the 60s.

Owen Wins Marion Masters In Six-Hole Playoff

(June 20, 2011) -  Former two-time winner Daniel Owen came from two strokes behind Sunday to deadlock 36-hole leader Osten Waite in the Marion Masters, then defeated the teenager in a playoff that lasted six holes. Owen, who won the Masters in 1997-'98, closed with a three-under-par 69 at the Ocala Golf Club to gain the deadlock, while Waite, son of PGA Tour winner Grant Waite, shot 71 as both posted 54-hole scores of three-under 213.
Both players parred the first three holes in the playoff, at which point it went to sudden death. Both parred holes 4 and 5, and Owen clinched it with a six-foot par putt on No. 6. He posted rounds of 72-72-69, with the first two rounds being contested at Golden Ocala and Golden Hills.
Teenager Brian Odaiyar, the 2009 champion, finished third with 74-72-69-215, while first round co-leader David Mears checked in fourth with 70-74-73-217. Next came 2005 winner Ken Godwin with rounds of 75-74-69-218; he was one of the three players who broke 70 in the final round. Berger Warner, who won the event 16 years apart in 1987 and 2003, shot 74-73-74-221; Jim Williams III, back-to-back winner in 1991 and '92 shot 79-74-74-227, and 2006 winner Jeff Morley posted rounds of 77-77-75-229. Ted Potter, now playing the Nationwide Tour, was the 2002 winner.

Osten Waite Leads Marion Masters

(June 19, 2011) - Osten Waite, eldest son of PGA Tour winner Grant Waite, took over the lead in the 30th annual Marion Masters with a 4-under-par 68 Saturday at the Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club. Osten, who turned 17 in June, followed up Friday's 2-over-par 74 round at Golden Ocala and holds a two-stroke edge over Daniel Owen and first-round co-leader David Mears going into today's final 18 holes at Ocala Golf Club. Owen, who won this event in 1997 and '98, has posted two even-par rounds of 72 for 144, while Mears added a two-over 74 to his opening round 70.
Teenager Brian Odaiyar, a Golden Hills member who won the Masters in 2009, is another two strokes back in fourth place after rounds of 74-72-146, followed by a trio at 147. Michael Crews, the qualifying medalist and then first-round co-leader with 70, soared to a 77 at Golden Hills; Matt Giovanelli checked in with 72-75, and former two-time winner Berger Warner (1987, 2003) tacked on a 73 to his opening round of 74.
Among the other past champions, Ken Godwin, the 2005 winner, shot 75-74-149, while Jeff Morley, the winner in 2006, put together a pair of 77s for 154. Jim Williams III, back-to-back winner in 1991-'92, shot 79-74-153.
After a round of 80 at Golden Ocala, Ty O'Shields moved up the leader board Saturday by posting 71 for 151, and included a hole-in-one on the 174-yard 11th hole.

Zylstra Wins Moot Thomas Memorial In Playoff

(March 1, 2011) - The odds are that if any senior tournaments contested around Marion County come down to extra holes after regulation play is completed, Bill Zylstra and Berger Warner will be the combatants. That's just what happened in the Moot Thomas Invitational at Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club over the weekend, with nationally-ranked senior amateur Zylstra defeating Warner with a birdie on the first playoff hole, the difficult par-four 17th.
Zylstra, who resides in Ocklawaha in the winter and Michigan in the summer, and Warner posted identical rounds of 71-72-143, one under par, for the 36 holes. Warner was one up going to No. 15, but Zylstra's birdie three evened the match. Frank Perry of Fayettevile, Ga., one of eight players who came from out-of-state, three-putted the green and dropped two back of the leaders and was never able to make up the deficit. He finished third with 72-74-146.
Still deadlocked coming to No. 18, Warner hit his second in the bunker to the left of the green, while Zylstra left himself a 30-foot birdie putt. Warner came out of the bunker about 12 feet from the hole, and, after Zylstra two-putted, Warner made his putt to send the match into overtime.
In the Super Senior division, EdCraig survived a see-saw battle over the final few holes to outlast Ron Getchell of Ocala by a stroke. Craig, from Orlando, shot 72-74-146, whole Getchell posted rounds of 73-74-147.

Zylstra Wins Third Straight Marion Masters Seniors Title

(February 17, 2011) - Bill Zylstra outgamed Berger Warner and Dave Falcone to the wire and eked out his third straight Marion Masters Seniors title, played Saturday and Sunday at Pine Oaks of Ocala and the Ocala Golf Club. The 59-year-old Zylstra, the top-ranked senior amateur in the country according to Golfweek, tacked a two-under-par 70 at Ocala Golf Club onto his 72 at Pine Oaks to edge Warner and Falcone by a stroke. Warner, winner of the event for three straight years (2004, '05, '06), shot 71-72-143, while Falcone posted rounds of 70-73-143.
Only two other players broke 150, Ken Godwin finishing fourth with 73-72-145, and Jeff Morley, the first-round co-leader, finishing fifth with 70-76-146.
Zylstra's two-under score was the worst of his three championships. In 2009 he shot 71-66-137, and last year he fired rounds of 71-69-140. Warner is the tournament record-holder with 66-67-133 in 2006.
There were four other former winners in the field - Duke West (2001), Randy Briggs (2002, 2007), Mike McGinnis (2003) and Larry Cotten (2008), but none was able to mount a charge to threaten for the title. Falcone, who many years ago played first base for the Boston Red Sox, fell a stroke short of winning his first title of any kind in Marion County.

Marion Masters Seniors Set For Feb. 12-13

(January 12, 2011) - The 13th edition of the Marion Masters Seniors is slated for 36 holes over the weekend of Feb. 12-13. Saturday's opening round will be played at Pine Oaks of Ocala and the Sunday round will be played at the Ocala Golf Club. There will be a 9 a. m. shotgun start both days.
Contestants must reside in Marion County and will be eligible to compete in one of three division - Seniors (50-59), Super Seniors (60-69), and Silver Seniors (70 and older). Cost for the event is $70 and includes range balls. The field will be limited to the first 128 paid entries.
In the first 12 years of the event, Berger Warner was a three-time winner, capturing the title for consecutive years from 2004-2006. Randy Briggs, Warner's long-time team partner, won in 2002 and 2007, while nationally-ranked senior amateur Bill Zylstra has taken the last two titles. Warner's 133 total in 2006 (66-67) remains the record winning score.

Waite's 73 Takes Hospice Pro-Am

(December 17, 2010) - Ocala's Grant Waite, who spent the 2010 season alternately playing the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and eGolf Tour, was the low professional in the Marion County Hospice Pro-Am played at Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club. Waite fired a round of one-over-par 73 to defeat Butch Benton by a stroke. It was another two strokes back to Brennan Webb and longtime PGA and Champions Tour veteran Lon Hinkle, who both shot 76. Ocalan Roger Rowland and Zoltan Veress tied for fifth with 77s.
Hinkle was also on hand to tape a commercial for JumboMax, the new grips recently introduced by John Mazzanoble, a Golden Hills member.
In the team division, determined by the two best balls of one pro and four amateurs, the winning team with a score of 17-under-par 127 was comprised of Junior Negron, playing with Bill Warfel, Lydia Kuttas, Gene Holm and Darryle Mongeon. Breaking a deadlock for second place at 129 was the team of Chris Quail, Dick Daubenmire, Anthony Scocca, Doug Hamilton and Norm Poe. Finishing third was the team of home pro Daren Robinson, Jerry Hock, Shawn Eldridge, Ed Refkin and T. R. McManus.
Warner Snares Second Oswald Title

(November 3, 2010) - In a field laden with former winners, Berger Warner captured his second Doug Oswald Seniors title at Ocala Golf Club by three strokes over Larry Vander Bie. Warner, the 2001 winner who has been a perennial contender ever since, shot rounds of 69-71-140, four under par, to easily hold off Vander Bie, who shot 73-70-143.
Gary Pettit finished tied for third with 72-71-143, the same score posted by nationally-ranked senior Bill Zylstra, who posted rounds of 70-73. Jim Carley of Ormond Beach, the 2007 winner, shot 73-74-147 to tie for seventh, while Curt Madson of Mount Dora, who won the title in 1997 and 2000, faltered with a Sunday 79 after beginning the day just one stroke off the lead. Warren Wilhite, from Palatka, winner in 2005, was down the list with rounds of 80-76-156, and 1996 winner Ron LeClair of Winter Park shot 79-80-159. The field was without Dr. Rob Hess of Casselbury, who has had a virtual stranglehold on the event since his first victory in 2002.
In the Super Seniors division, Ron Russo, who heads up the Marion Country Golf Association, scored a five-stroke victory over Ron Audi. Russo shot 70-74-144 while Audi was second with 71-78-149, one stroke ahead of Phil Leckey. Jerry Tarnow of Port Orange, who won the main event in 1994, finished tied for seventh in the Super Seniors with 78-76-154.
Arnold Captures First Marion Masters

(September 29, 2010) - There were eight former Marion Masters champions on hand to contest the 29th annual event last weekend, but newcomer David Arnold was a runaway winner of the 54-hole tournament played at Juliette Falls, Golden Hills and Ocala Golf Club. Arnold, a multiple winner around Central Florida since the beginning of the year, added his latest title by shooting rounds of 69-74-67-210, six under par. He defeated Kelly Gosse by six strokes, with Bryan Odaiyar, the defending champion, another stroke behind in third and tied with Evan Byrd at 217.
Arnold 's first-round 69 at Juliette Falls and third-round 67 at Ocala Golf Club comprised two of the five sub-70 rounds posted in the tournament. Gosse shot 68, Brent Dorman 69 and Jason Regan 67, all on Sunday at Ocala Golf Club. Dorman, winner of the event in 2001 and 2007, missed his chance for a third title with a middle-round 79 at Golden Hills after opening with 70 at Juliette Falls. He finished at 218, all alone in fifth place.

High Schooler Padova Wins Labor Day Classic

(September 10, 2010) - The Labor Day Classic drew 67 players to the Country Club at Silver Springs Shores and Austin Padova's first-round 65 propelled him to a three-stroke victory over Beau Benton and Michael Zito in the Championship A Flight. Padova, a high school junior from Pasco County, skied to 74 on Sunday, but his five-under 139 was still good enough to hold off Benton (70-72) and Zito (69-73). Bobby Johnson, whose Saturday 69 had him in second place, shot 78 Sunday and dropped to sixth.
Patrick Sweeny won the Championship B Flight with 76-65-141, six strokes better than Jeff Morley, who shot 76-71-147. Sweeny's seven-under round on Sunday was easily best of the day. Lou Koller accounted for the biggest romp of the weekend, his 72-76-148 winning the Senior Flight by 17 strokes over Roger Johnson (82-83-165).

(August 31, 2010) - It would take a calculator to determine just how many Marion County events Kelly Gosse and Brent Dorman have won between them over the years, so it was somewhat fitting for the City of Ocala Amateur to come down to a playoff between the two veterans.

Gosse shot 71-68-139 over the par-72 Ocala Golf Club course to deadlock at five under with Dorman, who fired rounds of 72-67, forcing the sudden death playoff. Both pared the par-four first hole, and Gosse ended it with a birdie on the par-three second.
The first-round co-leaders, Jason Regan and Austin Padova, faltered in Sunday's second round to fall just off the pace. Regan tacked a one-over 73 onto his Saturday 70 for a one-under 143 and a tie for third with Joel Durrance (71-72) . Padova shot 70-74-144, even par, to  drop into a fifth-place tie with Jeff Morley (71-73).
Rick Powers (73-72-145) edged Randy Briggs (75-71-146) for the Senior Division Championship.

Red-Hot Arnold Captures CC of Ocala Invitational

(June 7, 2010) - Marion County's newest golfing sensation, David Arnold, continued his scorching play over the weekend by adding the Country Club of Ocala Invitational title to his list of recent achievements. Arnold, who won the Henry N. Camp Invitational at Ocala Golf Club in April, posted rounds of 71-69 for a 36-hole total of 140, four under par, to defeat his brother-in-law, Brent Dorman, by two strokes. Ty O'Shields was another three strokes back in third place.
Arnold had tuned up for the event with a Wednesday round at the Country Club of Silver Springs Shores and made one of the most remarkable aces in the history of the area. His hole-in-one came at No. 3, a 373-yard par four with a mammoth lake spanning about 90 percent of the distance between the tee and the green. All but a handful of golfers play their tee shots to the left of the lake, then hit across the water on their second shot, which can be anywhere from 120 yards or so to more than 200, depending on how safe they played the first shot. Arnold merely ripped it across the lake to the undulating green, one of the most difficult to putt on the course.
Among the top finishers at the CC of Ocala Invitational were a pair of teenage sons of well-known local professionals. John Morgan Elliott, whose father, John Elliott Jr. is the long-time Director of Instruction at Golden Hills Golf & Equestrian Club, finished fourth at three-over 147. Osten Waite, son of PGA Tour winner Grant Waite, was 13th with 11-over 155.
In the Legends Division, Roger Little's two-under 142 edged Berger Warner by a stroke, with Ron Audi next at 146. In the net division, Rick Croton (138) was two strokes better than A. J. Kroeger. The Challenger Division winner was Bert Hughes with 148, while Tate Roth took the net division with 144.

Henry N. Camp Tournament  April 25, 2010

It would be difficult to determine just how many Henry N. Camp Invitational Tournament participants have taken lessons over the years from John Elliott, director of golf instruction at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. Suffice it to say it would be a goodly number, and Sunday's winner, David Arnold, can be counted among them.
Arnold took advantage of the monsoon conditions at Ocala Golf Club to fire a three-under par 33 on the front nine, then took home the traditional gray jacket when play was canceled with nine holes remaining for the Championship A Players. Play was completed in all other Championship divisions (except for E & F), and the six Flights.
Arnold trailed former Belleview High and FSU star Nick Smith by two strokes heading into the finale, but the winner was one of only two players in the Championship A division to break par on the front side. The other was Mike Zito, but his 35 was only good enough to move him into fourth place with 70-73-35-178. Six others shot even-par 36.
Smith, who tied for second in the 2006 Camp, shot 36, leaving him alone in second place after rounds of 68-71-36-175. He was one stroke ahead of Tyler Hock, the 2009 winner, who shot 72-68-36-176.
The huge field was littered with former winners of the event, including Hock, Joey Graham of Deer Island (2008), Brent Dorman (2007, 1992, 1991), Jeff Zysek (2005), Rob Hess of Casselberry (2004), Kelly Gosse (2002), Denny Allen of Crystal River (1996, 1988, 1987), Steve Bradley, who played under the name Steve Carrington when he won in 1995 and 1994, Jay Paquette of Howey in the Hills, co-winner with Dorman in 1992, Tom Butscher of Tallahassee (1984), Berger Warner (1978) and the grand old man of the group, Paul Tarnow of Tampa, who won in 1968 and 1959. Tarnow shot 92-95-92-279 to finish fourth in Flight 6.
Hess and Warner are the only two who have won both the Camp and the Doug Oswald Seniors, to be played at the same course in October.
Several former professional athletes competed, including NFL running back Don Nottingham (285, 7th in Flight 6), Red Sox first baseman Dave Falcone (72-82-70-224, winner in Championship D), and Gator kicker Judd Davis (70-73-38-181, 11th in Championship A).
The Camp has been won in the distant past by several players who went on to achieve great success on the PGA Tour - Doug Sanders (1954), Dan Sikes (1952), Frank Beard (1961) and Pat Schwab (1955).

Sunday, April 18 - Alex Slaton of Gainesville tied for first place today in the boys' division of the American Junior Golf Association's Preseason Junior hosted by Ocala-Marion Sports Commission. Kristine Odaiyar of Ocala ran away and hid to claim the title in the girls' division.

Slaton tacked on a one-under-par 71 to add to his opening-round 76 for a 36-hole total of 147, three over par, at the Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club. He had to make a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to deadlock with Jeffrey Meltzer of Bradenton, who shot even par 72 today after opening with 75 on Saturday. Meltzer chipped in twice during the round, one of them for eagle on the par-five fourth hole.
Harley Abrams of Boca Raton, who fired a stunning 68 on Saturday, was unable to get it together today and wound up with eight-over 80, missing a three-way deadlock by one stroke.
Four other locals made it into the top 26 in the boys' division, led by Bryan Odaiyar, Kristine's older brother, a senior at St. John Lutheran High. Bryan shot his second straight 77 for 154, and tied for 12th. Evan Byrd of Ocala added a 75 to his Saturday 81 for 156 and a tie for 19th. Osten Waite, son of PGA Tour professional Grant Waite, finished with 80-78-158 and deadlocked for 26th, along with Parker Jones of Gainesville, whose Sunday 74 was a 10-stroke improvement over Saturday's round.
Kristine Odaiyar, a 14-year-old freshman at St. John Lutheran, posted the only sub-par round for the girls today with a two-under 70 to go with her opening-day 74 and a two-day total of even-par 144. She was seven strokes ahead of Mary Fran Hillow of Orlando, who shot 78-73-151. Kristin Swindell of Bradenton (75-77-152) tied for third with Shannon Pak of Kenner, La. (77-75-152).
